The start of the year is the perfect time to take charge of your finances and set financial goals.

When it comes to managing credit, there are some really easy and effective ways to get the most out of your credit by using Credit Simple.

1. Check your credit score

Many people don’t think about their credit score until they’re ready to apply for a loan or credit card.

However, if you have a lower-than-expected score when you do apply, it could mean the difference between getting a suitable offer, or having to wait another six months to reapply.

Don’t let this happen! Log in to Credit Simple now to see what your score is. If necessary, you can then take steps to improve your credit score before you apply for credit.

2. Find out exactly what is impacting your credit score

Credit Simple gives you access to the top 4 Credit Insights that are impacting your score.

You may be surprised by what you see.

Have a look now by logging in to Credit Simple and viewing the Credit Insights tab. It won’t affect your credit rating.

3. Stay, switch or get a better deal from another bank or lender

In 2022, the RBA raised interest rates 7 times. As more rate hikes may be on the horizon, now is a good time to compare home loan offers.

With Credit Simple, you can access a range of personalised and exclusive offers based on what you are looking for. Simply log in to your account and visit the My Offers tab.

Discover how Credit Simple really can help you get the most out of your credit.

Christmas can bring a lot of joy, as well as a lot of budgeting challenges. And with recent rising inflation and interest rates, this holiday season could be one of the trickiest to budget yet.

Many of us may need to cut back on our Christmas spending this year to avoid ending up with debts that could take until Christmas next year to pay off.

However, you can reduce your Christmas budget costs and still have a holiday full of festive cheer.

Cheer that includes knowing that this season’s “ho ho ho” won’t become an “oh no no no” when your bills arrive in the new year.

Here are six tips to help you budget for a Christmas that won’t break the bank.

Plan your Christmas shopping now – including for next year

We know it’s easier said than done, but it pays to do as much Christmas shopping as you can well ahead of time.

Items like cards and decorations – which you can save for next Christmas – often become much cheaper straight after Christmas. You can also plan some of your Christmas present shopping at the start of the year, and take advantage of the best bargains as and when you see them.

Look for second-hand or unwanted gifts

Gumtree, Facebook, charity shops – there are a lot of places you can find quality second-hand goods that make great gifts, often for a fraction of the price that they would be new.

There’s a lot of stuff you can even find for free, such as Christmas decorations and other items. Sustainable and budget friendly – win-win!

Make a budget and stick to it

It’s very easy to go overboard with your Christmas shopping. Don’t! Set yourself a budget and stick to it. And remember, if you go under your budget, anything you save will be a cherry on top.

Buy what you need, not what you want

There is often a tendency to buy things we don’t need during the festive season, sometimes just because it’s on sale. Always ask yourself “Do I want this or need this?”. Try to stick to only what you need and do away with the wants if you want to manage your finances better.

Leave big purchases until after Christmas

Remember, Christmas is only just one day. If you’re planning to shop for big-ticket items, wait until Boxing Day or the January sales, as you’re more likely to get a better deal.

Also, try to limit yourself to one big-ticket item each year if you can – and only get that if you can afford it. It’s very easy to put items on your credit card and worry about it ‘later’, but remember you’ll still need to pay that bill.

Keep your credit simple

Spending only what you can afford will help your wellbeing. However, if you do need credit you can responsibly manage, compare the different products that are available and make sure you find something that best suits your situation and needs.

From everyone here at the Credit Simple team, we wish you a very happy and joyful holiday season and a prosperous new year.

Your credit report provides lenders a detailed view of your credit history. It includes the type of credit you applied for, the name of the lenders you’ve applied to and other information such as your repayment history.

Credit reporting has recently changed

From 1st July 2022, your credit report will now show any financial hardship arrangement you enter into with a lender.

The information shown will include the repayments you make under the arrangement, but not the reason for the arrangement or any other details.

Previously, financial hardship arrangements weren’t shown on your credit report.

How this change affects you

This recent change in the Credit Reporting Code ensures any financial hardship arrangements you enter into are shown on your credit report, under your repayment history.

Before the change, if you had a financial hardship arrangement with a lender, missed payments may have been reported on your credit report, without any mention of the arrangement.

5 things to remember

Only financial hardship arrangements you have entered into after 1st July 2022 will be reported.

If you enter into any financial hardship arrangement after 1st July 2022, the law ensures that this information is not used to calculate your credit score.

The law limits what a creditor can do with this information. They can’t make use of this information only to close down a line of credit.

The law limits what a creditor can do with this information. They can’t make use of this information only to close down a line of credit.

The financial hardship information has to be deleted after 12 months from your credit report, which is a shorter than a 24-month period for regular repayment history. This will ensure that your circumstances don’t have a long-lasting impact on your credit report.

Buy now, pay later (BNPL) services offer you the flexibility to purchase what you want when you want it. BNPL providers, as the name suggests, let you pay in easy instalments.

We can think of BNPL as today’s layby, as it essentially offers you the same ease as layby.

Some BNPL providers include:

Afterpay

Brighte

Bundll

Fupay

Humm

Klarna

LatitudePay

Openpay

PayPal

Payright

Zip Money

Zip Pay

Many major banks have also introduced BNPL products, which make the product you always wanted a bit more affordable.

While BNPL services have their advantages, they can also put you in a spot of bother if they are not managed carefully. It can be hard to juggle repayments and other financial commitments side by side.

Be cautious when using BNPL products

In 2021, ASIC reported that BNPL users were more likely than non-BNPL users to have experienced financial stress in the previous 12 months (21% versus 12%).1

ASIC further found that a considerable proportion of BNPL users were taking desperate measures to meet their repayments on time. One in five BNPL users had cut back on, or went without essentials such as meals, while one in six took out an additional loan to make their BNPL payments.1

Research by Financial Counselling Australia indicates that BNPL products are not a free or low-cost option compared to traditional credit cards. Their research indicates that the late payment fee and monthly account keeping fee can can add up to an amount that effectively equates to an extremely high quasi-interest charge. Financial counsellors are seeing increasing numbers of clients using BNPL for small amounts and then paying these fees for multiple transactions.2

Always use BNPL services with caution and remember to:

Keep an eye on the fees. Some BNPL services charge a subscription or monthly fee which could add up. These fees make the items costlier in the long run. There are other BNPL services which are interest and fee free, but if you don’t pay on time you could be charged a late fee.

Stick to a budget. While BNPL can offer you the freedom to buy what you want, you should always stick to a budget. People tend to use BNPL to get their hands on things which would otherwise be out of their reach.

It’s important to always stick to a monthly budget. Set money aside for essentials, utility bills, loan payments and other expenses before using BNPL.

Think about your credit rating. BNPL services may not access or check your credit history when you decide to sign up with them, but they may still report late or missed payments to credit reporting bodies like illion. So, a missed or late payment can be detrimental to both your credit report and your credit score.

Link BNPL to a bank account or debit card. Avoid falling into a debt trap by linking your BNPL payments to an actual bank account or a debit card, instead of a credit card. BNPL services may not charge you any fees, but your credit provider might still charge you interest for those payments. Always make sure you have money in your account to cover any BNPL payments.

More Australians are using BNPL to pay for goods and services

It’s safe to say that BNPL is a growing market and offers customers flexibility when it comes to paying for goods and services.

According to a survey conducted in 2021, around 26% of regular online shoppers in Australia used BNPL services to buy clothing and other accessories. Among the respondents, around 20% used BNPL services to pay for electronics and computing devices in that same year.3

Romantic partnerships can come in all shapes and sizes, from marriages to de facto relationships to casual relationships and everything in between.

No matter what the relationship, it’s always possible to end up in the shallow end if your significant other (SO) is drowning in debt or has poor spending habits.

Here are some common ways your partner can burden you with their debt and how you might avoid it:

1. You try to take out a joint loan with your partner, but are denied because of your SO’s past debt issues.

The only real way to escape this fate is to avoid it in the first place. That means when sizing up potential long-term partners (you know, the kind you’d trust to open up joint accounts with), you’ll need to take their financial attractiveness into account.

That means being open and transparent up front about your financial goals and how you can reach those goals together.

If you talk about the prospect of owning a home together you may have to share some personal information, like how well you save and how healthy your credit report looks.

If you don’t know what your credit report looks like, Credit Simple lets you check your credit report and score for free, anytime, and without negatively impacting your score.

2. Your partner asks you to take out a loan on their behalf.

This can impact anyone, whether you’re in a long-term commitment, or have only known each other for a few weeks.

If your partner doesn’t have the cash flow and/or the credit score to secure a loan, be wary of taking out a loan for them no matter how much they try to charm you or plead with you.

You’re responsible for any debts in your name, period.

If it’s to purchase a car, property or some other large asset – and you really do want to help – make sure to get a title for the asset and register it in your name.

You’ll still be responsible for the debt, but at least with a title, your SO can’t make off with the asset if the two of you happen to split.

It’s also a good idea to have your own personal savings account where you can stash away your own funds in case of such an emergency.

3. You open up a joint account with your partner, and they go on a spending spree.

There are a number of ways your partner can misuse a joint account and burden you with debt.

It could be a joint credit card where they spend a huge sum on gambling, buying shoes or whatever their fetish.

It could also be a joint savings account they drain in a similar vein, leaving you with nothing left to pay off your debts (personal and/or shared).

Another scenario is where you have a mortgage with someone, and they withdraw funds using the redraw facility (a feature on some accounts that lets you make extra payments in return for the ability to withdraw this extra cash later down the road).

If you’re worried about your partner’s spending habits, the best way to escape this fate is to avoid joint accounts altogether, or go for a joint account that requires each person’s authorisation for any withdrawals or purchases.

The bottom line

Like many aspects of a relationship, there’s a lot of shared responsibility when it comes to finances – especially as the relationship progresses.

The keys to keeping yourself safe from a reckless partner are to vet your potential partners at the outset of the relationship, let your finances intertangle only at a rate that feels appropriate to the relationship’s strength and put safeguards in place if you are happy to take on the lion’s share of financial responsibility.

How to save money on Valentine’s Day without looking cheap?

Valentine’s Day can be seen as a day that requires big spending.

But it doesn’t have to be.

Your time and attention is one of the best gifts you can give.

Here are five romantic Valentine’s Day ideas that will show love to your partner and your wallet.

1. Prepare a special dinner

Instead of spending money on an expensive meal at a restaurant, prepare a meal at home. Many of the dishes available at a restaurant can be made at home for a fraction of the cost. Add to that a few candles and a good movie and you’ll have a great night in.

2. Bubble bath and massage

Kick back and relax with a scented bubble bath and set the tone again with candlelight. Follow up with a pampering massage for the one you love.

3. Go out for dessert and drinks

You can still have a night out without breaking the bank. Enjoy an intimate dinner at home, then go out somewhere nice for dessert and drinks.

4. Have a picnic

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to go on a picnic. Bring your favourite food and drink, grab a cosy rug and find an idyllic, tranquil spot to enjoy the fresh air and each other’s company. If bad weather strikes, you can have a hip picnic indoors.

5. Bring breakfast in bed

Make Valentine’s Day special by bringing your partner breakfast in bed. Sharing a romantic meal and snuggling up together in the morning is the perfect start to a romantic day.

Do you find yourself running low on money before you get paid?

When you’re in the habit of living pay cycle to pay cycle, saving even a little bit of money can seem impossible. But it doesn’t have to be.

Below are five simple things you can do now that will help you save money.

1. Check your utility, telco and insurance contracts

While this can take a bit of time, it pays to periodically check your utility, telco and insurance contracts to see that you’re getting the best deal. If not, change providers.

2. Save money on food and coffee

Plan what you need before going food shopping and stick to your list. Avoid being lured into buying stuff you don’t need. Also consider substituting branded products with own-brand equivalents.

Pack a lunch for work instead of buying lunch and cut down your coffee shop spend by making your own coffee when you have time.

3. Take advantage of free stuff

When it comes to saving money, the best things in life definitely are free.

Instead of buying a book, check if your local library has it, or can order it in. For a day out, look up free events in your area, or take a trip to a park, beach or museum.

4. Pay off your debts

Pay off as much debt as you can and then start saving. Each debt freed up will be a huge leap towards your saving goals.

5. Monitor your spending with a Spending Tracker

Keep track of your finances with a Spending Tracker. They enable you to:

– Monitor all your bank and credit accounts in one place.
– Customise your spending breakdown with handy filters.

Comprehensive Credit Reporting is a regime that helps lenders judge how well you can manage your borrowing commitments and make repayments. Let’s take a closer look at what the system is, how it works and the potential impact on credit scores.

1. Changes happened in 2014

Comprehensive Credit Reporting was introduced in 2014. It allowed banks and lenders the opportunity to provide more information to credit bureaus about the accounts you hold with them.

2. Your score may change

The availability of more data on your credit file means that your credit score may change. However, that’s not certain. Credit Simple’s analysis of Australians who had data from a Big Four Bank on their files showed that 52 per cent of those people saw their credit score increase after the bank started contributing information. Meanwhile, 45 per cent of credit scores fell and 3 per cent remained unchanged.

3. There may be more credit information on your file

Thanks to CCR, you may start to see more credit information within your Credit Simple dashboard. This information may include the dates you opened and closed an account, the type of credit account you hold, your credit limit, and your monthly repayment history. Log in and see what’s changed.

4. CCR is a good thing for Aussies who pay their credit repayments on time

CCR is good for consumers, as it builds a more robust and detailed picture of your credit habits – basically, whether or not you’re a good customer when you’re using credit. Information being added may help to build a more thorough picture of how you handle credit and make payments, which may give credit providers a better idea of how much they should lend to you, and on what terms.

CCR also helps to build a more thorough picture of your credit information, which may make it easier for you to quickly build a credit file showing consistent repayment history, as well as possibly showing if you’ve recovered quickly after a negative event such as a default. CCR may help increase competition among credit providers so consumers can win through better deals.

5. Our mates across the Tasman are already all over CCR

In New Zealand, CCR was officially introduced in April 2012. Kiwis with positive reporting data included in their file have credit scores that are an average of 100 points higher than before. While CCR may not result in easier access to credit for everyone, the changes should bring greater transparency to lending decisions and may help people recover more quickly from adverse credit situations.
